If you don't have an HDTV right now you have saved a lot!

The costs are being driven down faster than any recent technology! My local electronic store has 26" widescreen HDTVs for $200.

Also you can always try the VGA. I think its well worth it!

yep, set that puppy up and enjoy a nice picture the way it should be. Anyone with a HD set should have a disc like Avia.

I might have one soon, depends on how much vacation pay I get and whether or not I want to get a new PC first.

Well there are like 70 people that live on my floor and we each chipped in like 20 or so bucks plus our floor funds and stuff.

And I have won as both guys. It wasn't really a tournament per-se just winner gets to keep playing if he chooses. I played like 3 in a row and then gave up my controller because I am nice and had to go pee, then one two more. To be fair I won the first few because I picked up the controlls really fast. No one else seemed to use the block button to dodge and stuff.

I should get him to let me play the Condemed demo, and is their a DOA 4 demo out?

I love 480p for movies and 720p for games. Some of my friends have 1080i TVs and I don't like interlaced after using 720p. Racing games are much smoother in 720p.

This is 100% correct. A progressive image eliminates all problems associated with an interlaced issue. However at some point there is a trade off. Because 1080i is such a considerably higher resolution than 480i, interlacing artifacts become much harder to discern, essentially eliminating some of them (edge aliasing and many moire patterns in most cases for example) due to the extreme resolution. In this case you are actually "losing out" by going with the progressive image due to its lower resolution.

It entirely depends on what kind of material you are working with, video games included. if you aren't working with games with fast perceived motion, even say a basketball game or racing game, you will probably in theory benefit more from 1080i than you would from 720p.
In reality at the size of today's consumer televisions 720p and 1080i are essentially a wash. too small to see the difference in resolution, and too small to usually see the difference between interlacing and progressive in HD resolution.

For a quick fix, most Pixar movies have an HDTV calibration guide. I would think any store that sells HDTVs should have something like that.

myawela

Most stores don't seem to have the Avia discs. At least, places like Circuit City, Best Buy etc don't have them. I ordered mine off of amazon.com and it was about $35 or so.

I don't know how the calibration on the Pixar movies is, but if it's anything like the THX ones it's way off from what it should be. I used to think the THX disc calibration was good until I got Avia.

The Pixar calibration is the THX calibration, so according to you it is way off. It is probably the best free option though.

yeah, I agree it's probably the best free option. I thought it was great at first, but after using the Avia disc I can see how wrong I was. Unless you know what you're looking for with the sharpness pattern (which I didn't but others may, who knows) you can never adjust that setting correctly. The contrast also turns out way too high the way it instructs you to use it. The color/tint tests are no good without having those glasses or whatever it mentions in there (Avia has colored strips to use with those tests for accuracy). The only thing that seemed like it was pretty close was the brightness level after using that. It'll make a movie look good, but it can most definitely be better.

Basically, if you have the money to buy an HDTV, you've got $35 to make sure you get the best quality picture you can out of it with calling out a tech to really do it up.

surrealist
02-08-2006, 10:44 PM
cmptrnrd16, I think you would be shocked at how detail Avia is over THX.. sure you can use THX as a stop gap 'til you get Avia.

But knowing my HDTV is calibrated to NSTC standards is reassuring.

I will have to reccomend Avia to our floor. The TV in our lounge is always off because everyone thinks they know shit about wha they are doing (it is a school of engineers and nerds this happens all the time) when they really have no clue.

Yeah... I meant components... and yes "the bf" helped me. Its niiiccceee! Flat Screen... The screen is a little distorted but... I am sure some internal settings will fix that. It says that it can up to 480i which is ...meh.. but its a start for my low budget. I think I need a new cord or something, because it will not work... nothing works for me. Darn it!

Is 24 inches the measure of the diagonal of the screen? How does that work exactly?

This is the Dell 2405FPW. It's an awesome LCD monitor (as you can see from the images). they go for $800+. But when you consider the size, image quality, and the input options, it's worth the price of admission.

There's also a 20" widesreen Dell 2005FPW. pictured below v

Yeah, it's the diagonal.

Also, you should also remember if you're comparing that a 20" LCD is actually larger than a 20" CRT. With LCD it measures the diagonal for the viewable area. With CRT it measures the size of the whole tube, and the edges of the tube are always covered up by the monitor or tv's frame (which is why you'll usually see a measurement for size and another for viewable area, which is usually at least an inch less).

I use Dell LCDs at work, and some of my friends use them at home. I think they suck compared to Samsung LCDs. The colors are not nearly as vibrant.

That comes down to user preference and settings. Your LCDs at work isn't calibrated for picture quailty..

Dell 20" LCD response time is faster than any Samsung LCD because of the LG panel they use.. Dell opt to go with slower panel on their 24" model, the same panel Samsung uses to cut cost.

Better yet, Dell 20" widescreen LCD cost only $400
