Thumbs up Bill Gates speaks at Live 8 UK

Bill Gates made a surprise appearance at Live 8 to show his support for the campaign to end poverty and hunger.

A short extract from his speech:

Quote:
Some day in the future, all people will be able to lead a healthy life, no matter where they were born. And when we do this, it will be the best thing mankind has ever done.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has in the past donated billions to fighting poverty

Seeing that there is only 1 reply, I figure the rest of you have a anti-feeding-the-hungry viewpoint.

no i don't have that viewpoint. i just feel like maybe we should do something about the hungry and poor in our own country. their are families that make way below the proverty level and i don't see the celebs putting on a concert for them. when people put on a concert for people like that, i'll take more notice.

Well Bill gates is a good guy. IM shure that some day we can end poverty but we have to some how figure out a way to make it so that everyone can be employed and stilll get payed the same....and even when that happens you have understand that prices for alot of thing will have to go up... and when prices go up for certain things that only people with alot of money ( by future standards) can afford it will just create jealousy, and jealousy creates crime and the sense of poverty and such. Maybe im not very good at explaning my veiws on these types of things but maybe i can simplifiy it

Unless everyone in the world can be made to think the same walk the same and talk the same there will always be hurt and anguish in the world. It sucks but thats the way I see it. And honestly I don't want to think the same as some other guy or dress the same or whatever.

I really hope im not right and that here is something that "us" as humans can do to rectifiy this situation, really hope there is....

I see.. its where people live that is more important..I don't share the same view point because I know things are being done in America to combat this problem...all because you dont see it on the news doesn't mean nothing is being done about it. Bill Gates has gave money for poverty in the America as well but it mostly goes un-notice.

But thats not the case.. the guy standing next to her has a lot more opportunities than a guy in a country like Africa.

There are programs in America for the homeless and poverty.

if there are so many programs here in america, why is my mother not in one of them? my entire life my mother and i have lived below the proverty level. i didn't see anyone helping her. you know what the gov't told her, she made to much money. She made to much money. Tell me how you can make to much money and you go without food and clothes so that you can feed and clothed your child. again when more is done to help people like that, i'll care more about people in third world nations.

yeah, I understand were you are coming from as well. Up until I was about 13 thats how my mom was. She sacrificed her own well being for ours. The government said the exact same thing to her about making to much money back then as well. In the end she lucked out and met a really nice property manager who trained her to take her place at the apartments we were living at. She did well there and got transfered here and there and now we do pretty well. Anyway, some day things will change, but it is up to us to do it.

They have alot of those in africa as well, its just that africa is so big ya know... Anyway I say we take care of ourselves first before we go around like a 800 pound gorilla sticking our fists into everyone elses problems. Were spending 80 billion dollars in Iraq, and nothing is getting better there, while if we just used half that amount in the us for homless poverty stricken families we could acctually erase it....i say there are about 10 million americans that livce below the poverty line, if we used 40 billion to help those people im shure we could bring that number down to atleast 5million, hell even les than that.

You two act like you're the only ones in America who lived in poverty ...God knows I have! but to single out human beings by their nationality isnt the way to do things... to say `because Americas fight with poverty isnt 100% we will let other people die until we save everyone here first is rather arrogant. I'm for everyone no matter where their from.

And chareece you had a roof over ahead many of the people you feel are not worth helping dont even have that...they have nothing absolutely nothing!
For you to experience poverty, then say to other people who didn't even have what you had `we're not going to help you because you're not American is just wrong.

I see you dont know Africa..there are remote regions of Africa were these programs in the dont reach... not to mention genocide. But as long as other countries including America bleeds Africa's rain forest and other natural resources thats good 'eh?

As for Iraq.. I don't agree with that war but the US government have to strategies what they will do once the war is over...if that will ever happen...

Would jesus turn away someone who ask for help because he/she was from another country?
God help me if I was born in a 3rd world country.

I look at everyone as my neighbor I dont care if they're next door or next country..If everyone would see the big picture I feel we would be able to end poverty because it a world wide problem..

Live 8 is for world poverty not just in Africa but all countries..Africa sticks out because its the worse but its not the only one. I wish you two would actually read the link instead of jumping to conclusions..

no offense, but you don't know what i know about genocide or povertly in other counrties. yea i learned some things about these topics in school, but you know what? i read alot of different things besides a game manual. i know my history of world events and i know how Africa ended up the way it is today. Do you? i read the news papers and i watch the news to keep abreast of current events. Plus if i don't understand something, i do research on that subject to gain a better understanding of it. So trust me, i know exactly what is going on in Africa. I also have family in Africa that keeps me updated on things that happen there. So before you say I shouldn't jump to conclusions, maybe you shouldn't either.

yes i'm proud of the fact that i had a roof over my head but what about the people that don't. Again where is there help? I don't think your getting my point. Came we take care of home before we help out someone else? I'm not saying "fuck the Africans". i'm saying "help the people here then help the Africans". and if you think that is wrong of me to think that well i don't care.

I don't claim to know more than anyone else...do you? I just feel strongly on this subject..

People in America are being help and some don't take advantages of the programs that are set aside for them... its not their fault but most of the time they don't know. Like I side Live 8 is for world poverty not just for Africa... or not just for Americans.

We can agree to disagree..thats fine.
